Children's Ministry

"Then [Jesus] put a little child among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, 'Anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not only me but also my Father who sent me.'"  ~Mark 9:36-37

Our children's ministry introduces children to the grand narrative of the Bible and deep theological truths in a manner tailored to their age and understanding. HBC strives to make learning fun while maintaining a strong focus on the centrality of Christ and the Gospel.   Activities and lessons are designed to captivate young minds, using music, storytelling, crafts, games, and age-appropriate discussions, and of course the Bible. The goal is that as children find joy in these activities, they will associate this joy with Jesus, the love of God, and the Bible, developing a life-long love for the things of God.

This ministry extends beyond the children; it actively involves parents, grandparents, caregivers, and guardians in the spiritual education process. Workshops and resources are provided to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to shepherd, lead, and instruct their families in a way that honors God.   In essence, this children's ministry is not just a program for kids; it's a comprehensive family ministry that supports and strengthens the entire family unit in their collective walk with Christ.
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me..."

Parent Resources

Parents/Guardians are the primary spiritual influencers of their children (and teens!). HBC desires to come alongside families to strengthen and resource them toward spiritual and holistic familial health.  Just below are button links to a few extremely helpful, meaningful resources for families with children from birth through the teenage years.

The QR code can be scanned to sign you up for HBC children's ministry text alerts and reminders or you can text HBCKIDS to (855) 487-8169.  Please save that phone number as a contact in your phone as "HBC Text Alerts."  You can also follow children's ministry-specific posts on our HBC Kidz Facebook page.

Children's Church

Hampstead Baptist Church believes it's important that children learn about corporate worship of God by participating with the entire congregation; however, during the sermon time, children in grades K-5 are dismissed to Children's Church (if they and their parents would like).  Children's Church is offered to allow for a more age-appropriate Bible lesson geared for children, using Crossway's The Biggest Story curriculum.

Wednesday Night Kids Activities

Grades K-5 enjoy Children's Choir practice for the first half hour each Wednesday night, followed by Bible activities and Bible lessons. Children follow the same schedule as the rest of the church with dinner being served from 5:30-6:15 p.m. and activities/studies from 6:15-7:15 p.m.
The lessons each week are based on catechism questions like those below:
Weeks 1-5
Week 1: Who made you? (July 17)
  • God made me. (Genesis 1:27)

Week 2: What else did God make? (July 24)
  • God made all things. (Genesis 1:1)

Week 3: Why did God make you and all things? (July 31)
  • God made me and all things for His own glory. (Romans 11:36)

Week 4: How can you glorify God? (August 7)
  • I can glorify God by loving Him and doing what He says. (Ecclesiastes 12:13)

Week 5: Why should you glorify God? (August 14)
  • I should glorify God because He made me and takes care of me. (Revelation 4:11)
Weeks 6-10
Week 6: Is there more than one God? (August 21)
  • There is only one God.  (Deuteronomy 6:4)

Week 7: In how many persons does this one God exist? (August 28)
  • God exists in three persons. (John 15:26)

Week 8: Who are they? (September 4)
  • The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19)

Week 9: What is God? (September 11)
  • God is a Spirit and does not have a body like man.  (John 4:24)

Week 10: Where is God? (September 18)
  • God is everywhere. (Jeremiah 23:23-24)
Children enjoy Children's Choir practice for the first half hour each Wednesday night, followed by Bible activities and Bible lessons. Beginning in Fall 2024, the children's ministry will be using the Baptist Catechism for Children as the guide for teaching on Wednesday nights. What's a "catechism," though?

Catechism comes from the Greek word, katekeo, which simply means, "to instruct."  The word has come to be known as a style of instruction that teaches the essentials of the Christian faith.  Most catechisms are based on a creed or statement of belief with a format being a series of memorized answers to specific question. This catechism is based upon historic baptist beliefs in the heritage of the First and Second London Baptist Confession of Faith (1644 & 1689). It is an adaptation of The Baptist Catechism which was first published in the 1600s as an adaptation of the Westminster Shorter Catechism. The words and language have been further modernized and adapted for use by young children. It has been published previously as "The Catechism for Boys and Girls" by Carey Publications.

The benefits of this catechism include aid in reading the Bible theologically, incorporating the question in the answer so that as children memorize the answer they also know the question, answers that are thorough but memorable, answers that are age appropriate, and a framework for theological education in the home.
